Universal Peace Day Concert
Central Park Band Shell, Central Park, mid-park, at 72nd Street, Manhattan, NYC, NY
Bruce Markow and other featured artists will each play a short set (estimated: 15 minutes) between noon and 5 p.m. An annual tradition since 1984, this concert brings people together to share their visions of peace on the anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima.
News flash: Bruce just rehearsed with Long Island-based musicians Stuart Markus and Hillary Foxsong for delectable backup singing on at least two of his songs at Sunday's show. Check out their own web sites to find out why Bruce is sad (for now, and excited for the future) to be featuring only a fraction of their treasure trove of skill, talent and mojo.
Other performers include popular folk duo Magpie, Japanese rock star Shinji Harada, the Ray Korona Band and many others, plus a tentative appearance by Vanessa Redgrave.
After the Central Park concert, please join an evening Universal Peace Day program at the Riverside Church on Manhattan's Upper West Side, also free.
Directions: Enter Central Park at either the West 72nd or East 72nd Street footpath.
From the West 72nd St. entrance go down thru "Strawberry Fields", past the statue of Daniel Webster, and follow the path to the Bandshell which will be on the right.
From East 72nd St., follow the path westward to the Bandshell.
From either direction, if you see the big Bethesda Fountain, the Bandshell is in the opposite direction. (Yes, I don't understand this last part of the official directions, either. But in any case, you'll be very near by at this point. So just listen for us, or ask anyone who looks like they know their whereabouts in the Park where the Band Shell is. -- Bruce)
